Our period delay treatment using Norethisterone 5mg tablets offers a safe and effective way to postpone your period.
How Does Period Delay Medication Work?
Norethisterone is a synthetic hormone that mimics progesterone. It works by maintaining high progesterone levels in the body, which delays the shedding of the womb lining—therefore postponing menstruation.
To delay your period, take one tablet (5mg) three times daily, starting at least three days before your period is due. Continue taking the tablets for as long as you wish to delay your period (up to 17 days). Your period will typically begin 2–3 days after stopping the medication.
Note: This treatment is not suitable for women currently using the combined oral contraceptive pill. Speak to your doctor about alternative options if you are on hormonal birth control.
How Long Can I Delay My Period?
We offer Norethisterone for up to 17 days of use, with a maximum of 60 tablets per treatment. Fewer tablets are required for shorter delays.
This treatment should only be used occasionally—no more than four times per year (once every three months). For more frequent period control, your GP may recommend hormonal contraceptives that reduce or stop periods long-term.
Who Is This Treatment For?
This treatment may be suitable for women who:
- Are not currently using hormonal contraception
- Have no history of blood clots or related conditions
- Need short-term control over their menstrual cycle for lifestyle or medical reasons
Are There Any Side Effects?
Like all medicines, Norethisterone may cause side effects. Common ones include:
- Bloating
- Breast tenderness
- Reduced libido
- Mild nausea
Extended use can increase the chance of side effects. Some women may also experience fluid retention, which could aggravate conditions such as high blood pressure, migraines, asthma, or epilepsy.
Serious Reactions & Risks
Though rare, serious allergic reactions can occur. Seek emergency medical help (999 in the UK) if you notice:
- Facial, mouth, or hand swelling
- Difficulty breathing or wheezing
- Itchy rash or hives
- Lightheadedness or fainting
Blood Clot Risk
Norethisterone may slightly increase the risk of developing a blood clot (venous thromboembolism), particularly if you:
- Are very overweight
- Have had a previous blood clot
- Have a family history of clots
- Are immobile for long periods (e.g. long flights, post-surgery)
- Have had repeated miscarriages
- Are recovering from major surgery or trauma
If any of these apply, we may not be able to prescribe this treatment and will refer you to a GP or specialist.
